What is an electronic signature, and how does it work?

An electronic signature is any electronic sign of a person's intent to agree to a document: a typed name, a drawn signature, a click on "I agree". E-signature software sends the document by email, records the signer's consent and each step they take, and produces a finished PDF with an audit trail of who signed and when.

What counts as an electronic signature?

The US ESIGN Act describes an electronic signature as a sound, symbol or process attached to a record and adopted by a person with the intent to sign it. In practice that covers a name typed into a box, a signature drawn with a finger or mouse, an uploaded image of a handwritten signature, or ticking a box that says you agree.

What matters is less the mark than the evidence around it: that the person meant to sign, agreed to do business electronically, and that the record of what they signed was kept.

How does e-signature software work?

01

Prepare

The sender uploads a PDF and places fields for each signer: signature, initials, date, text, checkboxes.

02

Send

Each signer gets an email with a private link, in order or all at once.

03

Consent and sign

The signer agrees to sign electronically, fills their fields and signs.

04

Complete

When everyone has signed, the finished PDF goes to all parties and the audit trail is kept.

03 / 04

What makes an electronic signature hold up later?

Intent

The signer took a clear action to sign, not an accidental click.

Consent

They agreed to sign electronically before they started.

Attribution

The signature can be tied to the person, for example through the email address the link went to.

An audit trail

Times, IP addresses and each step, recorded as they happened.

The record kept

A copy of the signed document every party can keep and reproduce.

How does Flaxxa Sign handle each of these?

Flaxxa Sign emails each signer a private link, asks for their consent to sign electronically before they start, and logs every step with the time, IP address and browser. Signers draw, type or upload their signature. When the last person signs, everyone is emailed the finished PDF, and the sender can download a signing certificate listing the recipients, the signing times and IP addresses, the timeline and SHA-256 hashes of the original document and of each signature image.

It provides simple electronic signatures. It does not issue digital-signature certificates or advanced or qualified signatures.

Frequently asked questions

It can be. Under laws like the ESIGN Act, a typed name adopted with the intent to sign counts. The audit trail around it is what shows that intent.
